I rip most of my CDs to Flac using dBpowerAmp R12 Reference (EAC for problematic CDs) and then use the dBpowerAmp Batch Converter to build my MP3 subset library. I convert a subset of this Flac library to MP3s using LAME version 3.97 -V2 -vbr -new. I have a library ripped to Flac ver 1.1.4 at level 8 for use with my SB3 at home.
So, if you want to use your portable DAP while performing physically challenging activities, like running or biking, I would stay away from hard-drive based DAPs.
